Leisee on Mt. Sunegga | The Swiss Alps | Zermatt

It is not always that you can get what you plan for. At first shot. This is applicable for life, in general and more in Photography.

Here is a classic case.

When I visited the Zermatt during my Swiss days, the location that I had narrowed down for a short hike was Riffelsee – One look at the images all over the internet and I’m sure that you would be as captivated as I was on the reflections of the Matterhorn on the waters of this lake. However at 3800 feet, late may was too early in the year to head there. In fact, as I asked the girl over the tourist counter a second time if she was sure that I couldn’t hike my way to the lake, she was actually offended and said that I could if wanted to die a painful death. So that out of the question, I had to do my research with whatever information was available around and figure out a plan B. Searching for blue patches on the map, I zeroed on Leisee.

The official information booklet proclaimed thus: “The Leisee lake, just below the Sunnegga, has plenty of space for relaxation, resting, sunbathing, cooling down, playing games, and barbecuing for both young and old. The lake, from which there is a wonderful view of the Matterhorn, is an ideal destination for families”. But located at about 2232 m above the sea level, the lake is, as you can comprehend from the picture, only a teeny tiny pool of water. It did have some reflections of the Matterhorn but unfortunately it was too windy get a still reflection even for a moment. After spending quite a bit of time around banks scouring all possible vantage points to get some reflections out, I eventually climbed up the hill and got a birds eye view of the entire scenery.

It is a nice landscape alright. But it is not what I wanted. But after all, you cannot get everything in life they want you want it. Can you?
