I saw a similar picture in a fellow photographer's collection and I wanted to make sure that I did something similar to that.
However, as is always with most of these things that inspire me, I wanted to add my own perspective to it. First up, I wanted only one of these weeds to be in the picture standing up alone against a completely green, blurred background. Sort of standing up against all odds. I also wanted these to be straight, in case you have seen these things in the wild, they are normally curved. That, I felt, would add an inner meaning to the already minimalist nature.
So last week at Pulau Ubin, I was in the look out for one of these opportunities and eventually ended up shooting this.
The big question however was to flash or not to flash - to put some fill light on the long piece of stem. Without the flash, it kind of looked too dark and dull. So I ended up adding the flash.
For those of you who are always curious about the EXIF, it is
ISO 100 | Canon 100mm macro USM | f/2.8 | 1/640 sec | Flash fired at High Speed Burst mode, ETTL -1.
