The Helix Bridge and Marina Bay Sands

The Scene:

The Helix Bridge, previously known as the Double Helix Bridge , is a pedestrian bridge linking Marina Centre with Marina South in the Marina Bay area in Singapore. The bridge complements other major development projects to spruce up the Marina Bay including the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort (That is how they call the Casinos in Conservative states!), Singapore Flyer, Gardens by the bay (upcoming, 101 hectares of greenery right in the heart of the city!) and an yet to be named business and financial center. It never ceases to amaze me how there is so much development going on here all the time especially when you think that there is not even another square inch of land left for construction.

The bridge was designed by a consortium comprising Australian architects the Cox Group and engineers Arup, and Singapore based Architects 61. The 280m long Helix is fabricated from approximately 650 tonnes of Duplex Stainless Steel. Canopies (made of fritted-glass and perforated steel mesh) are incorporated along parts of the inner spiral to provide shade for pedestrians.

The bridge leads you onto the Marina Bay Sands. This is not my first picture of the Sands, an amazing structure in itself. In case you missed it, have a look here. I know that I didn't do justice to this structure by talking about in that post as well. So, I'll follow up this post with another one to make amends.

Every night, there is an approximately 10 minute laser show replete with water screens and pyro-technics on the Sands and the adjoining ArtScience Museum,  which is another very interesting (?) structure. The laser beams on the top of the Sands building are part of this show. (Note to self: Get to the show sometime)

The Story:

This is one scene that I have been wanting to photograph ever since I moved to Singapore back in July. I used to work less than a kilometer from the Marina Bay but I have just been very lazy to actually get here and make this shot. This time, against all odds, I broke the laziness of my Saturday and headed out to make these shots. There is a very nice access area underneath the bridge and all I had to do was to wait until the time was right and try out interesting compositions.

The Shot:
